The Mexican Government is coming down hard on Social Distancing on the labor force causing a shortage of Asparagus harvesters. The Caborca growing region is coming to an end because of the high heat and the labor shortage which in turn is causing a big shortage of product. For the next few weeks, Asparagus supplies will be on the shorter side until the local season here gets going and Peruvian supply improves.
Growing regions now are in transition from Caborca to Consiticion in Mexico where production is fair and will continue this way for the next two to three weeks. The next growing region is in Irapuato Mexico in the 2nd week of May where volume will be good through the Summer months.
Peruvian Asparagus which normally starts at the end of May, has started in a slow way this week. Peru is also running into labor shortage and since it’s early in the season, product is not coming on. Currently there are only a few commercial flights bringing product in from Peru and should get better as we move forward.
Asparagus will be very tight and we are doing all we can to source product.
