Blueberries from Swain Foods and Southern Press & Packing
Growing up in Fitzgerald, Georgia, Johnnie Swain III always had dreams of having his own farm. After graduating from college, Swain ended up in the big city – working in Chicago at an advertising agency. However, Johnnie’s dream to own his own farm never faded. Finally, in 2013 after life altering events, Johnnie purchased raw land in Patterson, GA where he started Swain Farms, a blueberry farm in South Georgia. In addition to starting the farm, he also established Swain Foods, the first black-owned berry marketing company in the state of GA. In 2016 after working over 15 years in marketing, advertising and brand management, Johnnie and the family begin to manage the farm full-time. Along the way, they also began to market blueberries, blackberries, pecans, and satsuma oranges for other high quality growers.
Southern Press & Packing is now being run by a winning combination of third-generation farmers, business experience and expertise gained from years of working in agriculture, growing their own blueberries. Shawn Davis and his wife Karey, have joined forces with Karey’s father Archie McKinnon to create Southern Press & Packing which is today, a truly family-owned and run business. Their passion is focusing on Georgia locally grown farm products.
Yellow Squash & Zucchini from Southern Valley Farms
Southern Valley Fruit and Vegetable, Inc. was founded in 1987 by Kent Hamilton, a 6th generation farmer, along with his father, brother and best friend. The first few years of operation were difficult as Kent lost his brother due to a tragic accident and five years later Kent’s father passed away after fighting a long battle against cancer. These tragic events left Kent and his mother, Wanda, as the sole owners of the farming operation. Despite these challenges, the business continued to grow with help from close family members and their community. Today, Southern Valley is a highly recognized progressive and innovative growing, packing, and shipping facility. We are woman-owned and operate like a family, staying true to our traditional farm roots and values.
