National shortage for medium-sized sweet potatoes.
Packing houses have been doing their best to supply 10-16oz US#1 medium sweet potatoes to cover the demand but they are now experiencing extreme shortages.
Shortages will persist through most of August and well into September with the potential for supply gaps. If you have the ability to change menus, it would be wise to consider doing so.
A little more information to share why are we having a sizing issue:
Historically the harvest of sweet potatoes in North Carolina begins in August. With the drier than normal conditions last year, the 2018 harvest was pushed out in hopes of rain to promote better sizing. Unfortunately, Hurricane Florence hit the Carolinas/Georgia in September of 2018 before the crop was fully harvested and the fields were flooded with water. Once growers were able to harvest it is estimated there was approximately a 20-40% overall loss in the crop and created the supply gap we are now experiencing.
