November 28, 2018 – Romaine Lettuce Update

To our Valued Customers:

The FDA has identified the likely source of the product related to the current E. coli outbreak as having originated from the Central Coast growing regions of northern and central California. Romaine lettuce that was harvested outside of the Central Coast growing regions of northern and central California does not appear to be related to the current outbreak. Hydroponically and greenhouse-grown romaine also does not appear to be related to the current outbreak. There is no recommendation for consumers or retailers to avoid using romaine harvested from these sources. The FDA and Royal Food Service are advising that if you do not know where the product was harvested from to avoid using it.

In response to the initial alert issued by the FDA and CDC on November 20, 2018 Royal Food Service ceased distribution of all romaine products. We are working to replenish our inventory levels with product grown in those areas NOT linked to the E. coli outbreak. Those areas will include Arizona, Mexico, and Florida. Though availability will be limited, we will begin shipping those romaine products cleared by the FDA as soon as deliveries on November 28. Rest assured that all product delivered by Royal will be from growing regions not identified by the FDA in the current E. coli outbreak.

We have whole head romaine, romaine hearts, chopped romaine, and various salad blends available for order. Please contact the customer service department or your sales representative for the latest availability of romaine products.

Thank you,

The Royal Food Service Team
