CROP OUTLOOK updated 1/13/2010 FLORIDA FREEZE Citrus, Strawberries, Squash, Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Corn, Snap Beans, Bell Peppers, Eggplant, Cabbage, and much more produce... Frigid temperatures have hit the Southeast hard. Florida is experiencing record lows. Freezing temperatures have damaged crops and slowed harvesting of salvageable produce. Record lows were recorded across Northern and Central Florida. Forecasters expect another couple of cold nights, before temperatures begin to return to normal for this time of year. Experts are saying this is the worst big freeze to hit the state since the 1989-90 season. Damage to crops are just the beginning. It is expected that young trees and plants have been killed. Harm to leaves and twigs could negatively affect next year’s (2010-2011) crop as trees struggle to rebound. Rain later this week may exacerbate the problem as mold and disease gain access to already damaged plants. Some growers have delayed Spring planting in anticipation of these frigid temperatures, while others may have to replant damaged acreage. This may create a supply gap from this area come Spring harvesting. Crop assessments will continue through January as many crops may take weeks to show the true extent of damage. There is speculation that another freeze may occur later this month. Expect prices to react accordingly.
