BANANA SHORTAGES
Cooler weather in December in the Central American growing region has slowed the growth of bananas. This is combination with severe flooding in Ecuador in January and February has had a great impact on the banana growing regions of Central America. The imported bananas are arriving very green and there are quality issues. Increased transportation (oil/gas) has impacted every area of the growing and harvesting of bananas, which in turn is adding to the cost to get the product to market and also making a price increase necessary. The quality and supply situation is expected to last until the end of April. The cost of fuel situation is unknown.
